The Pilot episode of the fantasy drama series Grimm originally aired on NBC on October 28, 2011. It was written by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, the creators of the series, and directed by Marc Buckland.
At the hospital, the woman who transformed in front of Nick at the beginning of the episode arrives with a syringe. Realizing who she is, Nick intervenes and gets injected with the syringe instead of Marie. The woman escapes the hospital and meets up with Captain Renard; both of them had conspired to kill Marie. When Renard asks if Marie is dead, the woman says that because Nick was there to save Marie, Marie lived. Renard then tells her that they will have to try the attempt again in the hopes that Nick is not there and Marie is not conscious when they do so. As they drive away, Marie opens her eyes, having fully awakened from the coma.
Before the episode premiered on television, promotional screenings were held, and the entire episode was released on social media websites.[11] After a screening at Comic-Con, IGN did a preliminary review of the pilot, noting that "the monster effects were much better here than they were in [Angel or Buffy the Vampire Slayer]".[2]
The series premiere of Grimm was viewed by 6.56 million people, earning a 2.1/6 18-49 rating on the Nielson ratings scale.[12] This means that 2.1 percent of all households with televisions watched the episode, while 6 percent of all households watching television at that time watched it. Grimm had the highest non-sports rating on a Friday for any network since New Year's Eve of 2010.[13]
Reviews of the episode ranged from mixed to positive. IGN gave the episode an 8 out of 10, stating that it "is grounded in reality, and no costumes or settings tiptoe into an unbelievable place."[14] Newsday, stating that the pilot "is a well-made, entertaining TV confection," gave the episode a B rating.[15] The Wall Street Journal said Grimm "may be onto something good. It can be genuinely scary (the pilot has a "Lovely Bones" vibe that's not for children). But it has wit too, and avoids camp."[16] In a comparison with the Once Upon A Time, a show similar in genre to Grimm, The Hollywood Reporter gave Grimm the upper hand based on the pilot episode, calling Grimm "more grown-up in its approach than Once Upon a Time because it's more violent and less hokey."[17] However, in a comparison between the two shows by The New York Times, Once Upon a Time was seen as better, being described as "having the richer premise and more interesting characters".[18]
Performances (2): Again, we have a very solid cast. Giuntoli seems like an actual person in this role, rather than a Television Hero, and he and Hornsby have wonderful on-screen chemistry. I was intrigued by Reggie Lee as Sgt. Wu, who managed to inject the few lines he had in the episode with so much personality that it made me curious about his character. And Silas Weir Mitchell is a standout, providing wonderful comedy relief as Eddie Monroe, reformed blutbad.
Western Animation In Ben 10, this is how Ben discovered his Wildvine form in the episode Camp Fear. It's downplayed in that Wildvine wasn't particularly useful that episode, though the form was able to handle the immediate threat. Danny Phantom busts out his Ghostly Wail to defeat his future self when it looks as though he's going to be defeated and everyone will die. Technically, he first got it when he was ganged up by some really angry ghosts, but the Ghostly Wail did serve as a hidden weapon for his final battle in the episode. The Hollow: Mira discovers that she has mermaid-like abilities after the group's ship crashes into the ocean and she gets stuck in the ejector seat. Kai discovers that he has fire powers when he and Benjamini are trapped in a burning haunted house ride. Avatar: The Last Airbender: In the unaired pilot, Aang jumps off of a cliff in an attempt to trigger the Avatar State. In "The Avatar State," an Earth Kingdom general attempts to induce the Avatar State by putting first Aang, then Katara in danger. It works. In "The Puppetmaster", Katara learns Bloodbending when her Evil Mentor Hama takes control of Aang and Sokka and was about to make Sokka stab Aang. The Legend of Korra: Bumi discovers he's become an Airbender (as a result of Harmonic Convergence) when he falls from a cliff and inadvertantly saves himself by airbending inches from the ground. Happens literally, with Zaheer, after his lover P'li dies and he is holding an unconscious Korra while surrounded at the edge of a cliff. He discovers that P'li dying severed his last attachment to the world, allowing him to fly like Superman, and continue the final phase of his plans. Bolin discovers his ability to lavabend in "Enter the Void" when he, Mako, Asami, and Tenzin were about to be killed by lava flow. With nowhere to run, Bolin steps towards the lava and tries to bend it... and succeeds! My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Happens in episode 16 when Rainbow Dash finally manages to pull off her Sonic Rainboom technique to save her friend Rarity and her idols the Wonderbolts from plummeting to their doom after Rarity's wings failed and the Wonderbolts were knocked out in their attempt to rescue her. This is pretty much how Fluttershy's ability to fly at high-speeds works. She can match Rainbow Dash's flying speed, at least for brief moments, but only when it's absolutely necessarily, and other times seems to be an average flyer at best. In "The Cutie Mark Chronicles", however, this outright failed to work for Fluttershy in a flashback. As a filly, she was a weak flier, and when falling from the clouds to certain death, she couldn't fly to save herself. Fortunately, her fall was broken by a swarm of butterflies. Also fails to work in "Sleepless in Ponyville", where the flightless pegasus Scootaloo still can't fly even when falling down a waterfall. Thankfully, she is saved by the timely arrival of Rainbow Dash. In Winx Club, Bloom discovers her powers in the pilot episode only after being threatened by an ogre and some ghouls. She also only unlocks her fairy form after almost being finished off by The Trix. 781b155fdc
