Pambu Panchangam: The Popular Tamil Almanac
Pambu Panchangam is a Tamil calendar that has been published by Manonmani Vilasam Press in Chennai since 1883. It is widely used by Tamil speaking people all over the world for religious and astrological purposes. The name Pambu Panchangam means \"snake almanac\" because the cover page of the calendar features an image of a snake with 27 circles representing the lunar days.
The Pambu Panchangam is based on the traditional Vakya system of astrology, which uses mathematical formulas derived from ancient texts. The Panchangam contains information about the five basic elements of time: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar day) and Karana (half of a lunar day). It also gives details about the planetary positions, eclipses, festivals, auspicious days, marriage dates, etc.
The Pambu Panchangam is known for its accuracy and reliability in astronomical calculations, especially regarding the eclipse nodes Rahu (sun eclipse) and Ketu (moon eclipse). It also follows the traditional Tamil year, which begins on Chithirai Vishu or Puthandu (Tamil New Year) in mid-April. The current Tamil year is Shobhakruth Nama Varusha, which started on April 14, 2023 and will end on April 13, 2024.
The Pambu Panchangam is available in both printed and digital formats. The printed version is distributed by the Manonmani Vilasam Press and other agents across Tamil Nadu and abroad. The digital version can be downloaded from various websites such as HinduPad, Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Uttaradhi Math, etc. The Panchangam is also published in other languages such as Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, etc.
The Pambu Panchangam is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to know more about the Tamil culture, religion and astrology. It is a living tradition that has been preserved and transmitted for over a century by the Manonmani Vilasam Press and its founder Konnur Manicka Mudhaliar.

The history of Pambu Panchangam goes back to 1883, when Konnur Manicka Mudhaliar, a scholar and astrologer, started publishing the yearly almanac with the help of his son Subramania Mudhaliar. He was inspired by the Vakya Panchangam of Kashi Vishwanatha Iyer, a famous astrologer from Kumbakonam. Konnur Manicka Mudhaliar also wrote several books on astrology and palmistry, such as Jathaka Alankaram, Samudrika Lakshanam, etc.
Konnur Manicka Mudhaliar established a press called Manonmani Vilasam Press, named after his wife, exclusively for printing the Panchangam. The press was initially located at Seven Wells Road in Chennai. Later, it was shifted to Kondithope. The press also printed other books on religion, culture and literature. The press is still functioning today and is managed by the descendants of Konnur Manicka Mudhaliar.
The Pambu Panchangam has been following the same format and style since its inception. It has been using the same snake image on its cover page for over a century. The snake image is derived from an ancient Tamil tradition of drawing a snake on a palm leaf and marking the lunar days on its body. The snake symbolizes the moon and its phases. The Panchangam also uses the same Vakya system of astrology that was prevalent in Tamil Nadu before the advent of modern astronomy.
The Pambu Panchangam has gained popularity and trust among the Tamil people for its accuracy and authenticity. It has been used by many eminent personalities and institutions for various purposes. It has also been cited as a reference in many court cases and legal disputes involving astrology and horoscope matching. The Pambu Panchangam is considered as a cultural heritage and a living legacy of Tamil Nadu.
