One of the more interesting things about Ghostscript is that it is open-source.Ghostscript's source code is available from the gsweb home page: http://www.ghostscript.com/gsdev/ You are encouragedto read the source code in order to become familiar with how the programoperates.
The Ghostscript source archive is built using the GNU Autotools and nmake. You will need to have the Autotools installed (on Linux, you will probablyneed to use the package autoconf with the package libtool, and onWindows you will need a compiler which supports the GNU Autotools.) Theresulting Makefiles are quite complicated, so start by examining theMakefile for the top level directory. There are several sections to theMakefiles and you should always read the top Makefile. The individualbuilds, which are the sub-projects, have their own Makefiles. Eachtime you build a project, the Makefiles for the sub-project will recursivelyinvoked, so make sure that you study the Makefiles for each project.
If you want to try MacGhostView 6.1 without having to install it, you can download a snapshot of the MacGhostView 6.1 source code from the developers' website. This package contains a release candidate of MacGhostView 6.1. It will work for you to try for a short period of time, but you are not allowed to distribute it and it will not be supported. It may be unstable, and you should consider that when you use it.
The easiest way to obtain a full release version of MacGhostView 6.1 is to download the MacGhostView.tgz file from the developers' website. This file is a compressed tarball archive that you can unzip using the MacOSX Archive Utility. Once the unzipped file is in your directory, you can move it to your preferred location for applications. For example, you can move it to the/usr/local/bin directory.

You will also need to have gs/debugbinor gs/releasebin (use gsversion to find the appropriate one for your build) copiedinto the same directory as your gs binary. The Foomatic-RIP Mac OS X buildsystem will automatically run configure to find your GTK2 version and ifthe Foomatic-RIP Mac OS X build is successful, it will create ana executable called foomatic-rip. You can then run the programas normal. 827ec27edc
